This island is both beautiful and a tragedy site in WWII.

この島は美しくもあり戦争の悲劇の地でもある。

Kitanomaru Park was once the northern section of Edo Castle, where the residences of two of the three Tokugawa branch families — the Tayasu and Shimizu houses — were located. In the Meiji period, it became the site of the Imperial Guard, established to protect the Emperor. Today, it serves as a peaceful retreat for the people of Tokyo.

北の丸公園はかつて江戸城内の北の部分で、御三卿の田安家と清水家の屋敷があった、明治時代には天皇を守る近衛師団が置かれるようになった。今は都民の憩いの場です。

新宿御苑
秋の気持ちの良い日。スティングのフラジャイルが新宿御苑にこんなに合うとは思わなかった。二十歳のころ、行ったこともないのに、ここに無性に行きたくなってママチャリで走ってきたことを思い出した。今回も閉園の2時間前に家を急いで出て、今回はEバイクで来ました。

Shinjuku Gyoen National Garden
I never imagined Sting’s Fragile would fit Shinjuku Gyoen so perfectly.
It reminds me of when I was twenty — I’d never even been here before, but for some reason I suddenly felt an irresistible urge to come, so I rode all the way here on my mama-chari (a Japanese mammy bike). This time I also left home and rush at two hours before the close time, and this time rode my E-bike!

東禅寺、泉岳寺周辺
東禅寺は臨済宗妙心寺派、泉岳寺は曹洞宗の、どちらも江戸時代初期に建てられた禅寺。またどちらも歴史の舞台として有名で、東禅寺は第一次・第二次東禅寺事件でイギリス公使が襲撃された。その後生麦事件へとつながっていく。泉岳寺は言わずもがな、忠臣蔵の赤穂浪士47人と浅野内匠頭夫妻の墓がある。
雨の日のバイクツアーも良いものです。篠笛は私です。

Around Tōzenji and Sengakuji
Tōzenji, of the Myōshinji branch of the Rinzai school, and Sengakuji, of the Sōtō school, are both Zen temples built in the early Edo period. Both are also famous as historical sites: Tōzenji was the scene of the First and Second Tōzenji Incidents, in which the British minister was attacked — events that later led to the Namamugi Incident. Sengakuji, needless to say, is where the forty-seven rōnin of the Chūshingura story and their lord, Asano Takuminokami, along with his wife, are buried.
Even on a rainy day, a bike tour around these temples has its own charm. I played the bamboo flute.

日本民藝館　棟方志功展
旧前田家本邸の隣りにある、思想家の柳宗悦によって1936年に建てられた美術館。民衆的工芸品を民藝と名付けたのもこの人。今年は版画家、棟方志功の展示を3回続けてやっているらしい。棟方志功も僕が以前から心惹かれていた芸術家のひとり。幸運に感じる。
この国は神やら自然やら芸術やらが境界なく混ざり合っている。
音は僕の石笛です。

The Japan Folk Crafts Museum – Munakata Shikou Exhibition
Located next to the Former Maeda Residence, this museum was founded in 1936 by the philosopher Yanagi Muneyoshi, who coined the term mingei (folk crafts) to describe the everyday handcrafted objects.
This year, the museum is holding a series of three consecutive exhibitions dedicated to the printmaker Munakata Shikou, an artist who has long fascinated me. I feel fortunate.
In this country, the divine, nature, and art blend together without boundaries.
The sound is my stone whistle.

旧前田家本邸　和館洋館
旧加賀藩主前田家16代当主の前田利為侯爵によって、1928〜30年にかけて建てられた。昭和17年(1942)利為は戦死し、戦後はアメリカ軍に接収されるなど、紆余曲折を経て、今は目黒区と東京都によって管理されている。近現代の歴史を体現しているところが、東京の建築や庭園の醍醐味でもある。

Former Maeda Residence — Japanese and Western Buildings
Built between 1928 and 1930 by Marquis Maeda Toshinari, the 16th head of the Maeda family, former lords of the Kaga Domain. In 1942, Maeda was killed in action, and after the war, the property was seized by the U.S. military. Following a series of twists and turns, it is now managed jointly by Meguro City and the Tokyo Metropolitan Government. This place embodies Japan’s modern history — one of the true charms of Tokyo’s architecture and gardens.

久米川阿波踊り　今年最後の踊り納め
都立家政のかせい連で笛を吹いています。昨日は久米川まで遠征。阿波踊りは徳島県の夏の踊りでしたが、戦後に東京の高円寺でも踊られるようになり、その後全国に広まりました。ひとりで笛を吹くのもいい、みんなで踊るのもいい。

Kumegawa Awa Odori — the final dance of the year.
I play the Japanese flute with the Kaseiren team from Toritsukasei. Yesterday we went to Kumegawa for a performance.
Awa Odori originally started in Tokushima Prefecture as a summer dance, but after the war it began to be performed in Tokyo’s Koenji area and has since spread all over Japan.
Playing the flute alone is wonderful — and dancing together with everyone is just as great.
